Mod Podge Easter Eggs

My girls love to decorate Easter eggs.  Even more than decorating them, they love to hide and find eggs.  We've already had a couple of practice runs for Easter morning.  Even after they've found the eggs that the Easter bunny has hidden, they love to rehide them for each other and continue the hunt.  Needless to say, we don't usually eat the hard boiled eggs after they've been found.  They are usually pretty beat up and cracking.  For this reason, I don't really like using real eggs for our Easter hunt.  They are ready for the trash before the girls are done with their egg hunts. 

The other option is to use plastic eggs.  They come in fun colors and prints but if you just buy them, you miss out on the fun of decorating.  This year the girls and I decided to try decorating plastic eggs.  We had some already in our Easter supply stash.  We just added some tissue paper, ribbon, newspaper, scrapbook paper, decorative hole punches, and mod podge to our supplies and got decorating. 

I cut small pieces of the tissue paper up while the girls got busy spreading a layer of mod podge on the eggs.  To make stained glass window style eggs, they glued on all different colors of tissue paper on to the egg.  We also used this technique to add some newspaper print to the eggs.  You can use any kind of paper you have on hand, maybe wrapping paper.  The thinner the paper, the better it wraps around the egg.  If your paper is more stiff, you may want to use smaller pieces.  You can either cut it or rip it for a different look.  Add a couple of coats of mod podge over your egg, letting it dry between coats.

Another thing we tried was to paint mod podge onto the egg, and then wrap pieces of ribbon around it.  You can also use decorative paper punches to create fun designs to add to your eggs.  We used large polka dots and a flower design.  While your eggs dry, you don't want them to be sitting on paper because it will stick to it.  We used a plastic strawberry bin, or you could use an egg carton to set them in. 

Now you have decorated Easter eggs that can be hidden over and over.  No need for refrigeration and they won't start to stink!  Have fun creating ideas for your eggs!  Happy Easter!
